Ballast Water Management Convention (BWMC) addresses inspections of ships to proof that they are in compliance with BWM standards. This may be done by either indicative or further detailed sampling the ballast water. Sampling is a complex process and it is beneficial to harmonize the sampling activities in a regional sea to avoid that vessels are compliant in one port, but not in another port just because of different methods applied.

This training is aimed for the port state control authorities and police from all COMPLETE countries, i.e. those experts who will later go out and sample the vessels for compliance control with the D-1 and D-2 standards of the BWM Convention. After this training the attendees will know how to select tanks to be sampled, how to take indicative and detailed samples and how the samples are processed to analyse, assess, and document compliance with ballast water management standards.
